Чтобы узнать состав 35-сантиметрового кинжала, ученые провели рентгеновское сканирование. Как выяснилось, кинжал изготовили методом низкотемпературной ковки. Причем, ковали его не в Египте, а в местах, где пониженные температуры.
Как пояснили ученые, изначально в находке их удивило, что кинжал был изготовлен из железа, тогда как железный век начался лишь спустя столетие после смерти Тутанхамона. В итоге исследователи пришли к выводу, что предмет ковали из метеоритного железа — кусков металла, упавших из космоса и затем лишь обработанных на Земле.
Теперь спектометрия показала, что кинжал состоит из железа, никеля, марганца и кобальта. В почерневших пятнах на лезвии нашли также серу, хлор, кальций и цинк.
«Мы обнаружили небольшие черные пятна на поверхности кинжала, — рассказал Томоко Араи из Технологического института Чиба в Японии. — Оказалось, что это сульфиды железа, которые обычно встречаются в виде включений в октаэдритных железных метеоритах». По словам профессора, присутствие сульфида железа, а также характерный тонкий узор на клинке указывали на то, что он был выкован при относительно низкой температуре — менее 950°C.
Железный кинжал из метеорита, как выяснили исследователи, на самом деле, был подарен Аменхотепу III, деду Тутанхамона, королем Митанни, области в Анатолии, когда фараон женился на его дочери. Так что, возможно, космический кинжал Тутанхамона был семейной реликвией, полученной из-за границы.
